Stadium Scenery

I've been doing some work on the SiteLab, getting it ready to generate site maps for missions.

You might remember Annie's comp for a forest map:
Well we're not quite there yet but we're making some good progress:

What we've got going on here is a kind of stadium effect, where scenery near the map stays low, and further out it gets taller. This allows it to be lush without obscuring the play area.

If you play with it you can see that we still have camera issues, especially with looking down. I've been thinking a lot about how to solve that and I don't really feel like I have a great answer yet. We could do fog, or lock the camera, or a ground plane, or some combination of effects. But for now we validated that we can add lots of stuff to a scene easily, and it actually looks alright. It will look better when I stop them from intersecting each other I think.. then we can make the scenery denser and it should look good.

Other things I want to explore for the forest map: atmospheric particles. Animated dappled shadows. Shafts of light? Wind.

Things we need for maps in general: floor decals. Debris and more scenery, especially scenery that can be near or on tiles.

But all that can wait. Next I think I'll get some actual site map generation going, and do the same for caves, and then move on to making combat fun.
