Sometimes I wonder what the core of Legacy is, as in, what about this game is unique, what do I believe in, what's the kernel of an idea that's been true since the beginning and still is?
I think there's a bunch of ideas that we've played with that have legs, and I feel great about that, but one thing I notice is that I basically haven't touched the character generator for probably like, over a year, aside from some minor tweaks in porting it. That's because I'm already pretty happy with it.
I'm happy with it because it already generates characters that I believe in; I see their face, name, gear, and blurb, and I can tell you stories about them. So, I guess the character generator right now is the heart of what makes Legacy Legacy.
Expanding on that, there's a term in the Fate RPG called "High Concept", which is the one aspect that sums up what your character is all about. Stuff like, "international martial arts celebrity", or "veterinarian without borders." I've been wondering if we could generate something similar for our characters programmatically.
So, at a very basic level, you could be a "Human Warrior from Leventon," which is accurate but boring, but perhaps as your character ages and acquires more texture you might mature into a "One-Eyed Veteran Shieldbearer." The idea is to compose a high concept by looking at your various aspects, picking a few, and boiling them down, likely with some metadata, into something that uniquely represents that character. Then that's what you call them, not Warrior, Hunter, or Mystic. Those names are for the freshly minted only.
